Collagen has gained significant popularity in recent years due to its ability to offer an array of health benefits relating to hair, skin, nails and joint health. At Nourished, consumer feedback is extremely important to us and so we developed Collagen+ in reaction to the rising demand we were receiving from our valued customers.
Despite its rise in reputation, the differences between various forms of collagen remain relatively unknown. In addition, the negative impact certain collagens can have on the environment are often overlooked by their manufacturers and retailers. In this blog, we’ll break down the benefits of our premium and vegetarian Collagen+ range, as well as highlight some of the environmental concerns in the industry.
Why is collagen important?
Collagen is one of the core proteins that is found in the human body, that provides strength and contributes to wound healing. This natural compound is essential for holding cells together and being a component within the connective tissue [i].
Collagen can be found within bones, muscles, skin, tendons, cartilage and more. Some research suggests that around one-third of all proteins found within the body consist of collagen [i].
However, as we age, the natural levels of collagen inside our body gradually decline, which can result in visual signs of ageing in the skin. This usually begins around the late 20s mark, with a more significant reduction in collagen production happening every year from that point onwards. By the time we reach the age of 40, collagen production is then even more drastically depleted [ii].
This can be important as it can impact your skin, bone health, hair, and tendons. We will get more into the clinically proven health benefits of Ovoderm Collagen, which can be found in Nourished Collagen+ products, below.
Environmental Impact of non Vegetarian Collagen
Marine collagen can have some detrimental impacts on the environment which can be often overlooked.
As marine collagen is made from fish, it can be linked to overfishing in some instances where the materials are unsustainably sourced, even if they are from a waste product.
A recent investigation from the Guardian in 2023 also found links between deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, and collagen production from non-vegetarian sources, such as from cattle. Deforestation is a key environmental factor affecting our modern way of living and the investigation found that around 80% of the forest lost in the Amazon through deforestation was in relation to the cattle industry, (an industry where bovine collagen is also sourced).
At Nourished, we are passionate about sustainability and go to great lengths to ensure that all of our ingredients are ethically sourced, and either vegetarian or vegan. We chose Ovoderm®, for our Collagen+ range for it’s multiple health benefits for skincare and joint health, whilst also being more environmentally sustainable than traditional collagen products.
This vegetarian form of collagen is obtained through a non-solvent full-spectrum extraction process from upcycled eggshells generated by the local food industry. This not only avoids the use of harmful solvents but also repurposes eggshells that would otherwise contribute to waste and pollution by going to landfill. No eggshells are created specifically for the production of Ovoderm.
This vegetarian blend of collagen also helps to reduce the water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that would result from depositing those eggshells in landfills. This sustainable approach contributes to a circular economy, where waste is minimised, and resources are used efficiently.
A highly effective dosage
This unique method basically refers to the way in which the collagen is extracted from the eggshell membrane, and results in a product that is far more superior than a typical collagen ingredient.
Rather than a splitting this singular form of collagen from the other core components, it is instead fully extracted along with other beneficial ingredients. This results in Ovoderm consisting of over 400 proteins, Collagen I, V & X, Glucosamine, Elastin and Hyaluronic acid.
This ultimately leaves you with a much more premium and higher quality source of collagen and protein, but also in a format that's more convenient and easier to consume as it requires a much smaller dosage than other collagen products on the market.
You only need to consume a daily dose of 300mg of Ovoderm® to maximise the potential health benefits. This is significantly lower than other collagen products, which don't contain additional ingredients (some of which required up to 8000mg).

- Biotin: proven to contribute to the maintenance of normal hair and nail growth
- Zinc: shown to support fertility and reproductive functions while helping the body process carbohydrates, fats and proteins in food.
