We often set targets and goals for improving our overall well-being; be that in the form of exercising more each week, introducing healthier foods into our diet, or drinking more water. Bettering your oral health is rarely mentioned in the same conversation though. But why is that, considering poor oral health can lead to far more than just gum disease?
What is the Impact of Poor Oral Hygiene?
The Centres for Disease Controls and Prevention state that more than 80% of adults will experience a dental cavity by the age of 34 and 40% state they have experienced some form of pain in their mouth over the past year [viii].
When it comes to what can be caused by poor oral hygiene, the list includes ulcers, pain, inflammation, loss of teeth, dryness of the mouth, swelling and much more.
The most common issues are gum disease and tooth decay, which can lead to further problems if left untreated [viii].
Bad breath may also be a sign of poor oral hygiene and gum disease [ii]. If you don't brush your teeth at least 2x/day for 2 mins (or not to an adequate standard) then food particles can remain in the mouth, cause bad breath and may lead to gum disease [ii] [iii].
Arginine is another ingredient you should be aware of due to its oral health properties. This ingredient diffuses around your teeth to energise good bacteria in the mouth and strengthen your body's natural defence against cavities [x] [xi]. This protective barrier helps to withstand your exposure to acids which gives you an extended relief if you also have sensitive teeth [ix]. Tooth decay is a condition where the hard enamel that covers our teeth starts to break down. This can lead to cavities (holes in your teeth), sensitivity and even tooth loss.
But NHS England states that this isn't just bad news for your teeth and mouth, as poor oral hygiene can have negative ramifications on your entire body such as causing strokes, diabetes and even heart disease [i].
There are multiple studies into how heart conditions could be linked to poor oral hygiene. A study from 2018 looked at over 65,000 cardiovascular events and found that there could be a link between heart disease and tooth loss [vi].
When looking into how poor oral hygiene can cause other health issues outside of the mouth, a recent study from 2019 also suggested that people are two times more likely to be at risk of strokes when suffering from gum disease due to how inflammation of the gums can affect the oxygen flow to the brain [vii].
