What exactly is lycopene?

Personalised nutrients for you Get Your Recommendation

What is Lycopene?

Lycopene is a plant nutrient that is responsible for giving red and pink fruits, such as tomatoes, pink grapefruit, and watermelons their distinctive colour. Lycopene has seen a serious rise in popularity recently as more and more people discover the benefits that it can provide to them as part of a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle. While it's mostly consumed in fresh fruit, Lycopene can also be included in supplements like our Nourished stacks.

What are the benefits of Lycopene?

Lycopene can protect against free radicals, including sunburn.

Lycopene is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family. Antioxidants protect your body from damage caused by compounds known as free radicals. When free radical levels in your body outnumber antioxidant levels, they can cause oxidative stress in your body which has been linked to certain chronic diseases. Studies have shown that lycopene's antioxidant properties can help to keep free radical levels in balance. [ii]

There is evidence to show that lycopene offers some protection against the sun's damaging effects. In one study, several people were shown to have had less severe skin reactions to UV exposure after consuming 16mg of lycopene from tomato paste.

Supplementing Lycopene can help improve heart health.

Lycopene may also be able to help lower your risk of heart disease by reducing the factors that potentially cause it. This happens through reducing free radical levels as well as reducing LDL cholesterol levels and increasing the more beneficial HDL cholesterol levels. It can also offer significant benefits to those with metabolic syndrome, a combination of health conditions that can lead to heart disease.

Lycopene helps strengthen bones and eye health.

Lycopene has also been shown to prevent or delay the formation of cataracts and can reduce your risk of macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults. The antioxidant action from lycopene may also slow the rate of the death of bone cells, reinforce bone architecture, and help to keep your bones healthy and strong.

How to supplement Lycopene.

There are plenty of different foods that offer Lycopene. The most common place you are likely to find it is in tomatoes. Generally speaking, a serving of fresh tomatoes contains between 4mg and 10mg of lycopene. However, with our Nourished stacks, each serving contains 100mg. Not only that but the lycopene found in raw fruits and vegetables like tomatoes is in a form that is much more difficult for your body to digest than the form found in our Nourished stacks.

Nourished offers nutrient-packed gummy stacks to suit specific lifestyle and goals, like our High Flyer stack, specifically created for those with busy schedules who want to be able to keep going all day long! Our Nourished gummies combine 7 different active ingredients in one delicious gummy, making their consumption much easier than taking multiple pills and tablets. So, what should I take we hear you asking? Complete our short questionnaire to build your own stack and add lycopene to your personalized gummy to help you feel stronger, healthier, and more energized.
