Gummies vs Pills - Which Absorb Vitamins Best?

Gummies vs Pills - Which Absorb Vitamins Best?

The vitamin industry has remained relatively stagnant for decades with standard isolated pills and tablets which are hard to swallow, inconvenient to consume (especially when you have to take more than one) and not personalised to your individual needs. Recent research has also suggested that supplementing vitamins in pill format is also not always effective, and by consuming them in a gummy structure instead can increase absorption levels.

At Nourished we encapsulate all our active ingredients into our patented pectin formula. This allows us to make personalised blends and combine 7 different vitamins, minerals and super-foods together without them interfering with each other. It also allows for a much higher absorption rate than standard pills and capsules, as they are consumed and digested as a macro-nutrient. We’ve examined the reports and studies which show that absorption of vitamins can be increased through encapsulation and being consumed as a gummy, in order to provide the most effective nutrition possible.

Benefits of encapsulating probiotics

Probiotics are a living bacterium with multiple benefits for the digestive and immune systems. They need to be kept protected from their external environment through consumption and digestion until the bacteria reaches the small intestines where it can get to work. This can be done by a range of different methods including spray-drying, freezing and vacuum-drying or encapsulating in a gel type formula like we do at Nourished.  A recent report titled, ‘Encapsulation Technology to Protect Probiotic Bacteria’ states why encapsulating probiotics is so important, ‘The goal of encapsulation is  to create a micro-environment in which the bacteria will survive during processing and storage and released at appropriate sites (e.g. small intestine) in the digestive tract.’

Vitamin D absorbed better in gummy format

Vitamin D is an extremely popular supplement and is currently recommended by Public Health England to be consumed by the entire UK population to support healthy bones and muscle. A recent study looked to establish whether Vitamin D supplements are best absorbed when taken as a pill or gummy.

The study found that there was a significant increase in the bio-availability of Vitamin D prepared in gummy than those manufactured in tablets.  The factors for this result were multiple  but included the preparation and coating of the gummy and the way in which they are consumed. The study suggested that gummies are chewed and their dissolution begins in the mouth when combined with saliva, and then continues throughout the body; which gives them greater bio-availability than pills which are swallowed whole.

The impact of wholefood ingredients

It is also important to consider what goes into your supplements to distinguish how effective their absorption levels are. Many multi-vitamins are packed with high concentrations of vitamins which can often do more damage than good and are a classic example of where ‘less is more’. The method in which they are mass manufactured, chemically isolated and often packed with bulking agents all have a negative impact on the efficacy and bio-availability of their active ingredients.

Dr. Linda Kennedy MS SLP ND, comments in her article, ‘The Difference Between Wholefood Supplements and Isolated Vitamins’

‘Whole food supplements are superior to vitamins in every way. Whole food supplements are comprised of concentrated portions of entire foods, not synthetic extracts. The advantage of these supplements is that you are getting a rich source of natural vitamins, but not so high that you are essentially overdosing. Also, whole food vitamins contain vitamins and phytonutrients and many more cofactors and enzymes, which exponentially increase vitamin absorption in the body.’

Not all gummies are equal

Whilst the  evidence and logic suggests that supplementing wholefood vitamins via a gummy is more effective than in isolated pills, the quality of the gummy also needs to be considered. Many gummies contain high levels of sugar which can have a detrimental impact on teeth, mood, skin and weight when consuming every day. At Nourished we use maltitol syrup and erythritol as a natural sweetner but keep our stacks completely sugar free. Many gummy vitamins also use gelatin as a gelling agent, whereas at Nourished we use pectin to ensure our entire range is vegan.
